Oscar Banks has everything under control. In a town called Candor, Florida life is perfect. Everyone is happy, healthy, and well-behaved -- because Oscar's father is brainwashingeveryone with secret subliminal messages that are embedded in classical music that is played all over town day and night. Oscar's found a way to secretly fight the messages. But he's got everyone fooled: he's got the perfect GPA, the perfect girlfriend, and the perfect cover. Nobody would suspect the town founder's son of treason, so nobody knows that Oscar's made some messages of his own to deprogram his brain. Oscar has even found a way to get rich. For a hefty price, he helps new kids escape Candor, Florida before they're transformed into cookie-cutter teens. But then Nia Silva moves to Candor, and Oscar's carefully-controlled world crumbles.

there's even a pic of it being the only fiction book in the top 5 books circ'ing at my library still, and we've been reading it for a few weeks now! :)

thank you for writing a page turner. the ending is the best part. it is *so* not what teenagers would expect or want to happen. and in that way, they respect it more. :) they're dying to know if there's going to be a sequel! i am, too, but i understand if you can't tell.

if you have a second to send us an email, we're going to meet next week for pizza and to talk about your book. and they'd love to get an email from the author herself! :)

oh my gosh, you guys, she wrote back! :) pam bachorz wrote us back! :) here's what she said:

Hi Anna,

I am so glad your book club loves CANDOR! I can't tell you how much your blog post and pictures mean--seeing REAL readers with CANDOR reminds me what it's all about. That's especially nice these days as I'm in the midst of a tough rewrite, for my next novel. I'm going to print a few pics out and hang them in my study!

The ending is definitely what I hear about the most, from readers, and I love that--even if they hate the ending! I wanted it to surprise people and make them think... and leave room for them to decide what happens next. I think of a book like a painting; there's also something that could be happening outside the edge of the frame, and the person experiencing the painting (or book!) gets to decide what's out there.

As for a sequel, never say never, but right now I'm working on an entirely different YA novel. It's still dark and creepy though! I can't seem to write anything that doesn't turn out dark and creepy.
